The concept we entered into Colorin AI was 'a monster truck outline seen from the front, its body and huge tires filled with repeating decorative patterns'. Saying the tires out loud is what made the difference. Left unmentioned they come back black and plain, and on a monster truck the tires are half the drawing, so half the page would have been wasted.

The star on the hood was not requested. It arrived as the drawing's own idea of what a monster truck wears, and it turned out to be the one element that gives the page a focal point.

Why this patterned monster truck coloring page is special

The two tires dominate and they work on two levels at once. Each carries about seven enormous chevron tread bars, and each bar is filled with fine parallel hatching. Then in the gaps between the bars, where a real tire would just be rubber, there are curling spirals and scrollwork.

The hood is the quietest and best composed area: the star in the centre with a dotted outline, wave and ribbon shapes flowing away from it to each side, and rows of small dots tracing the curves. The windshield is filled with fine parallel lines with a small pendant hanging from the mirror.

Let the star lead. Pick its color first, then build everything else around it. A gold or red star with a cooler body behind it is the arrangement that reads best, because the star has to win against tires that take up more space than it does.

On the tires, choose between the bars and the gaps and commit. Dark bars with pale spirals between them makes the tread pattern jump forward. Pale bars with dark gaps makes the whole wheel read as a decorated disc. Doing both dark loses the pattern entirely.

The five roof lamps with their stars are the easiest win on the sheet. Amber inside, a dark ring around the outside, and they light up.

Keep the chassis grey and plain. Coloring the springs and links as brightly as the body is the one mistake that makes this page look messy rather than designed.
