How this coloring page was created

The concept we gave the generator was "A sugar skull centred in a circular mandala of radiating petals, dots and repeating patterns" into Colorin AI, in the zentangle style. A mandala is a circle worked outward from a centre, and putting a skull at that centre is the simplest way to make a Day of the Dead page that reads as meditative rather than festive.

The generator drew four distinct rings rather than one continuous pattern, which makes the page far easier to colour in stages.

About this sugar skull mandala coloring page

The innermost ring is a collar of broad pointed petals directly around the skull. Beyond it comes a ring of narrower petals, then a band of small repeated shapes, then a scalloped outer edge.

At the top of the circle a single flower breaks the ring, which is what stops the mandala reading as a wheel.

The skull in the centre carries flower eyes with dotted rings, a heart nose, a patterned brow and a row of narrow teeth.

The circle nearly touches all four edges of the page, so there is very little white left outside it.

Everything is symmetrical around a vertical axis, and the rings are evenly spaced, which is what makes the drawing calm rather than busy.

It is the most orderly page in this collection and the one to reach for when the detailed pages feel like too much decision making.

Coloring Ideas and Techniques

Mandalas are coloured ring by ring, never section by section. Pick a colour, do the whole ring, move outward. That is the entire method.

Alternate warm and cool between rings and the circle will appear to move. Same colours placed randomly and it will not.

Leave the skull white. It is the centre and it should be the quietest part of the page.

The flower at the top wants the brightest colour on the page, since it is the one element deliberately breaking the symmetry.

Do not outline anything. The rings are already separated by their own lines and adding more closes the page up.

This is the page to give someone who says they cannot colour. There are no decisions to make beyond which colour goes next, and it is impossible to get wrong.

Printed at full size it is about forty minutes of steady work, which is shorter than most of the intricate pages here.

There are three circular pages in this collection: this one, the marigold mandala and the calavera mandala. This is the plainest of the three and the right one to start with, because the rings are wider and there are fewer of them.

A finished mandala also cuts out well. Trim around the scalloped outer edge and it becomes a paper plate sized decoration, which is a better end for it than a folder.
