"Crossing the lower page" is what created the empty band. Asked for a night train without a position, the generator centers it and fills the sky behind with texture. Pushed to the bottom, the train leaves a tall open sky, and the drawing came back far plainer than the prompt suggested: six stars rather than a sky full, and no lines at all in between them.

What sets this page apart is how few closed shapes there are. Count them and the whole drawing is under forty pieces, most of them large, on a full letter sheet. Nothing on it is smaller than a fingertip.

That is exactly what a very young child needs and what is hardest to find. Simple coloring pages are usually simple because they are small drawings on a big page. This one is a big drawing with almost nothing inside it.

The count: the moon is a single crescent, the widest object in the sky. Six five pointed stars surround it, all the same shape at four different sizes, none of them touching. The train has a rounded nose with two front windows and one square side window, then three passenger cars, each carrying exactly three rectangular windows in a row, joined by two narrow concertina links. Nine wheels sit under the train, drawn as plain ovals with no spokes or hubs. Beneath them the track is two long parallel lines with about fourteen ties, and the ties stop before they reach the left edge. The engine's roof carries one small raised box, a single round lamp sits low on the nose, and the two front windows are drawn as one rounded pane split down the middle. Nothing else is drawn: no buildings, no hills, no ground.

Coloring Ideas and Techniques

Do the sky first and do it dark. This is the one page in the set where filling the background is easier than filling the subject, because the sky has no obstacles in it, and a dark sky makes the moon and the six stars appear without them needing any color at all.

Color the nine windows the same warm yellow. Lit windows are the only source of light in a night scene, and repeating one warm tone across all nine is what makes the train look occupied.

Leave the wheels and the track alone, or give them the palest tone you have. There is a great deal of white space at the bottom of this sheet and it is holding the train up.
