Train Coloring Pages — free printable collection from Colorin AI

All 48 train coloring pages here are free. Click any sheet to open it, then download it as a PDF or as an image and print it as many times as you want. Every page is drawn to fit US Letter or A4, so it comes out of a home printer without resizing anything.

The spread is wide on purpose: 12 of them are big open shapes a four year old can finish in one sitting, and 14 are dense enough to keep an adult busy all evening.

These train coloring pages run from a choo choo with a smiling face to a locomotive drawn rivet by rivet, and the six styles in between are what hold the collection together. The cute ones are round shapes with faces and almost no background behind them. The cartoon ones hand you a whole vehicle in a scene: a monorail gliding above the street, a coal train with hopper cars, a subway pulling into a lit station.

The storybook sheets pull the camera back and set the train inside a place, a river valley or a village of rooftops or a windmill farm, so the engine becomes one part of a landscape instead of the whole picture. The simple ones strip a train back to an engine and two cars. The detailed and the patterned sheets close the set out at the far end, where every panel is either riveted or filled edge to edge with pattern.

What can you do with these train coloring pages?

They work very well for teaching a child the difference between one kind of train and another, because this collection actually holds the different kinds. There is a steam locomotive puffing smoke, a bullet train, a coal train with hopper cars, a tanker, a monorail and a subway. Naming them while coloring sticks better than naming them off a poster, and by the end a four year old can tell you which one carries people and which one carries coal.

They are also good for counting, because the cars, the wheels and the windows all repeat and can be pointed at. You can ask how many wheels the engine has before the crayon goes down. The easy train coloring pages are the ones for that, big open shapes for younger kids and for smaller hands still learning to stay inside a line, while the dense sheets at the other end are train coloring pages for adults who want something that takes a whole evening.

Several sheets also have a blank panel built into the drawing. The detailed locomotive carries an empty ribbon banner across its front and the freight cars have plain side panels, which is room for a name. Print the same sheet twice and two children each get their own engine, or ask Colorin AI for that locomotive with the name already lettered on the banner.

Your own town has a station we never drew. Make yours and print it tonight.

How do you color a train?

Real trains fall into three color families, and picking the family before the pencil does most of the work. Steam locomotives were black or dark green iron with brass fittings and oiled wood, so they take a narrow, heavy palette where the brass is the only bright thing on the page. Freight stock is boxcar red, rust and gray, which is why the coal and tanker sheets come out right in the colors most people skip. High speed trains went the other way: a white body carrying one saturated stripe, usually blue or red.

The circus and balloon sheets are the happy exception, because a circus train really was painted every color at once, and that is the place in this collection to empty the pencil case. Everywhere else three or four colors from one family will read more like a train than twelve will, and the simple sheets hold up beautifully with two. If you want a version with the lines thicker still, so a three year old can fill it in with a marker, you can ask for it drawn that way.

How we made this collection

Here is what sets this collection apart from a stock coloring site: none of these pages existed until we asked for them. Each one began as a single sentence typed into Colorin AI, and the sentence is what decided the drawing. The smiling choo choo came from "a cute choo choo train engine seen from the front with a big smiling face and round wheels, a cloud shaped puff of smoke rising up the page above it."

Change a few nouns and the whole page changes with them. The riveted locomotive came from "a detailed steam locomotive coming toward the viewer with rivets, piping, spoked driving wheels, a boiler and a tall smokestack," and naming the rivets is the whole reason that sheet is dense. The trestle bridge asked for the beams to drop the full height of the page, and that one phrase pulled the camera back until the bridge, not the train, became the subject.

Why are train coloring pages so popular?

Train coloring pages stay in demand because a train is one of the first machines a small child learns to name, and the naming is most of the fun. A parent printing for a three year old wants the same engine again and again, and a train survives that: swap a steam funnel for a bullet nose and it is still a train, so a big set reads as many different machines rather than one repeated. The rest of the audience arrives from the mechanical end years later, looking for spoked wheels and riveted plate on a quiet evening.

Create your own train coloring book

A collection like this covers the trains everybody knows, and the one you actually want is usually more specific than that. Making it yourself takes a sentence. An alphabet train with one letter on every car, a birthday engine with the number on its smokebox, a train pulling farm animals instead of freight, a snow plow engine pushing through a drift, the same locomotive drawn in all four seasons, or the station in your own town with its real name on the board.

The sentence really is the whole method. "A cheerful little steam engine coming toward the viewer with a smiling face, a round funnel and a small cow catcher, smoke curling up above it" is the exact line that drew one of the sheets above. Swap the smiling face for a snow plow on the front and you have a different page in seconds.

If trains lead somewhere else, there are truck coloring pages, car coloring pages and airplane coloring pages drawn in the same styles.
