How this coloring page was created

The prompt we used was "A circular mandala built from layered marigold blooms, petals and repeating decorative rings" into Colorin AI, in the zentangle style. A marigold is already a mandala: rings of petals around a centre. All the drawing had to do was carry the idea out to the edge of the page.

The four buds at the corners came back with the drawing and they matter more than they look. They break the circle just enough that it does not read as a target.

About this marigold mandala coloring page

The centre is a tight spiral of small petals, no bigger than a coin, and each ring outward is drawn slightly larger and looser than the last.

There are seven rings in total, the outermost made of wide rounded petals with a soft scalloped edge that follows the shape of the circle.

Four closed buds sit at the top left, top right, bottom left and bottom right, each on a short stem with two pointed leaves.

Between the buds, the outer edge of the mandala touches close to all four sides of the sheet, leaving very little white.

There is no skull anywhere on this page. It is the only Day of the Dead sheet in this collection with no calavera on it at all.

What makes it belong is the flower itself: the marigold is the flower of the holiday, and a page of nothing but marigold petals is as much a part of it as an altar.

Coloring Ideas and Techniques

Ring by ring, working outward, and shift the tone slightly with each ring. Seven shades between deep orange and pale yellow gives the flower depth without any blending.

If you only have three oranges, repeat them in the same order outward. A repeating sequence reads as deliberate; a random one reads as running out of pencils.

Keep the four buds in the darkest tone you used. They are the outermost elements and dark corners pull a circular composition together.

Leave the very centre white or nearly white. The eye needs somewhere to land, and on a mandala that place is the middle.

Do not outline the rings. They are already separated and an outline turns petals into scales.

This is the calmest page in the collection and the best one to hand someone who wants to colour without thinking about the subject at all.
