An altar is built upward, so the drawing stacks its tiers rather than spreading them, which is what fills a tall sheet.

The floral border around all four edges came back with the drawing. It frames the altar the way the flowers around a real ofrenda do, so it stayed.

About this ofrenda coloring page

An ofrenda is not a religious altar so much as a table of welcome. Families set out photographs of the people they are remembering, the food and drink those people liked, candles to light the way and marigolds to mark it.

On this page the top tier carries a framed portrait between two lit candles, with a strip of papel picado hanging from the edge of the cloth. A sugar skull sits in the centre of the second tier, flanked by two more cut paper flags.

The lower tier holds two round loaves of pan de muerto on a plate and a cluster of marigolds at each side, all drawn with thick, closed outlines.

The border is a repeating vine of small flowers and leaves running around the whole page, finer than anything inside it.

Coloring Ideas and Techniques

Start with the cloth on both tiers. It is the largest area and once it carries a colour the objects standing on it stop floating.

Keep the photograph white with only the frame coloured. It stands for a person, and leaving it blank is what lets a child imagine whoever they want in it.

Marigolds orange, candles pale with a warm rim at the flame, bread a light tan. Those three choices carry most of the page.

Colour the border last and lightly. It is a frame, and a heavy frame swallows the altar it is supposed to hold.
